According to Sakmongkol AK47, Daim implied that 80 percent of youths will vote for the opposition. I wonder what Najib could do about it.
One option is to appeal to them by having more young leaders in the cabinet. Khairy KJ could be one of those that could be elevated to Deputy Minister post. Having Khairy would mean, we would have a young leader that would have the clout and influence amongst youngsters. Unfortunately, Khairy is in the elite class and would only appeal to a small group of up market young executives. There are some risks though should Khairy be appointed. If the opposition were to dig into his past, they could compile many "black files" of Khairy's doing during Pak Lah's tenure as PM. That could be a bomb shell that would hurt BN's chance of winning hearts and minds of young voters. Critics would say Khairy do not deserve to be elevated. UMNO Youth failed to woo young voters thus why should he be rewarded. Some may even go extra mile by alleging that Khairy deliberately engineers BN Youths failure to win over young voters to the advantage of the opposition.
Having said that, still, Najib need to have more youths as Deputy Minister with one caveat that Najib did promise to reduce the number of Cabinet Ministers. Erm, he promised not to have too many Ministers. But Najib did not promise the same for the post of Deputy Ministers. How about having Deputy Minister (2) posts for all cabinet portfolio all to be held by young leaders below 40 years old.
To appeal to youngsters , Najib should appoint those that could entertain - can hip hop and rock with them. Good look and shape matters too. Articulate and intellectual young leaders sells well to only a very very small group of todays' youths who are largely fun loving and easy going . What we need now are young leaders that could interact and entertain - good in music, culture and sport.
Najib still has the time to make amend. But time is running out.
